New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated in an interview that communication between himself and President Donald Trump varies regarding who calls or texts first. The New York Post reported that Mamdani told Fox News host Shannon Bream that neither leader is precious about who initiates contact. Mamdani explained that his focus remains on what is best for New York City. [1]

The comments come after public statements from both leaders regarding their working relationship. According to a report from X, Trump previously stated that he gets along great with Mamdani and referred to him as a very nice gentleman from New York. Separately, WKYC reported that Mamdani made remarks regarding Americans rebuking the Trump administration. [4][5]

Mamdani assumed office as the 112th mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026. He is a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America, and he previously represented the 36th district in the New York State Assembly from 2021 to 2025. Mamdani is the first Muslim and first Asian American mayor of New York City. [6]

Policy differences have previously surfaced between the mayor and other state officials. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mamdani and pro-Palestinian activists have advocated for divestment from Israel bonds, while New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli pledged to maintain state pension fund investments in those bonds.
