New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement of acting as a rogue federal agency after an officer shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in Manhattan, Fox News and msnbc.com reported. Fox News noted that the shooting occurred while Belgal's five-year-old son was inside the vehicle. The Guardian placed the location of the shooting in the Manhattan enclave of Marble Hill, while the New York Post described Belgal as a 28-year-old from the Dominican Republic. [1][4][6][7]
Speaking in a televised interview with MS NOW host Jacob Soboroff, Mamdani said plainclothes ICE agents looked more like mass shooters than law enforcement officers, according to Fox News, the New York Daily News, and the Guardian. Fox News reported that Mamdani accused ICE agents of treating the law as merely a suggestion and questioned if residents could distinguish them from dangerous attackers. According to msnbc.com, the mayor demanded during a nearly two-hour phone call with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin that federal authorities end ICE operations in the city. [1][2][4][7]
Attorneys for Belgal told the New York Post that he is being held in solitary confinement at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn with a bullet still lodged in his neck, leaving him unable to eat. Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reported that New York City's Democratic Socialists are calling on Mayor Mamdani to fire Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch following the incident. [5][6]
The mass deportation campaign and deployment of ICE agents in New York City has been a central issue during the second presidency of Donald Trump. Hundreds of anti-ICE protesters have been arrested in the city by the New York City Police Department and its Strategic Response Group. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mamdani had previously held unsuccessful phone negotiations with President Trump and Secretary Mullin to demand the removal of federal immigration agents from the city.
