A former New York City police officer has been charged with second-degree murder following the fatal stabbing of jogger Katie Suarez in Brooklyn. Police sources told the New York Post that 27-year-old Sayed Mohassib was charged on Saturday after investigators tracked him to his home. Officers located Mohassib after video footage showed him leaving the area around the time of the attack. [1]
According to the New York Post, Mohassib admitted to slashing Suarez on a Brooklyn footpath last week, but told police that he has no memory of carrying out the attack. Police sources said he was previously removed from the New York Police Department. [1]
The attack occurred on a jogging path along the Shore Parkway Greenway promenade in Gravesend, as FTMQ News reported earlier. Suarez, a 28-year-old bank teller, was stabbed in the neck on Friday and was subsequently declared brain dead and placed on life support at NYU Langone Hospital. [4][5]
Following the attack, the police department offered a 10,000 dollar reward for information leading to an arrest, as FTMQ News reported earlier. Phil Vetrano, whose daughter Karina was murdered on a Queens running path ten years ago, publically urged Suarez's family to pursue justice. [4][5]
