Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks returned to Saturday Night Live to revive his Halloween character David S. Pumpkins, UPI and Variety reported. According to UPI, the character appeared during the show's cold open flanked by dancing skeletons played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan. The sketch showed Pumpkins popping out at a couple played by Jeremy Culhane and Grace Reiter during a horror ride. [1][2][3]

The cold open was then interrupted by James Austin Johnson performing an impression of United States President Donald Trump, UPI and HuffPost reported. According to UPI, the Trump character compared himself to Pumpkins and reminded viewers to vote in the upcoming mid-term elections. Variety reported that the segment also featured Saidah Belo-Osagie portraying Nicki Minaj in a spoof of the musician's support for Trump. [1][2][3]

The David S. Pumpkins character was created by Saturday Night Live writers Mikey Day, Bobby Moynihan, and Streeter Seidell. The character first appeared on the show on October 22, 2016. HuffPost noted that this original appearance took place shortly before Donald Trump was elected to his first term as president. [2][10]

The Halloween edition of Saturday Night Live was hosted by actress Inde Navarrette, according to The New York Times and Variety. Variety reported that Navarrette took a swipe at comedian Shane Gillis during her opening monologue. [6][7][9]
