A second payment scheme has been approved for landowners along the route of the South Kerry Greenway, Radio Kerry reported. Kerry Fianna Fáil TDs Michael Cahill and Minister Norma Foley welcomed the additional payment scheme. They stated that the new funds will be paid in addition to any existing compensation amounts agreed for the land. [1]
The Irish Independent also reported that landowners along the greenway route are set to receive thousands of euros under the new compensation scheme. [2]
Kerry County Council previously used a compulsory purchase order to acquire the property needed for the 27-kilometre greenway, which runs between Glenbeigh and Cahersiveen. A total of 138 individual landowners are affected by the route. Once the national planning body approved the order, the local council took ownership of the land to start construction works while price negotiations continued. [1]
The South Kerry Greenway is a planned off-road rail trail designed for use by cyclists and walkers in County Kerry. It follows part of the former Farranfore to Valentia Harbour railway line, which was operated by the Great Southern and Western Railway from 1893 until its closure in 1960. [3]
