Grand jury upgrades charges against retired detective to second degree murder

A grand jury upgraded the charges against 62-year-old retired police detective Victor Romero to murder in the second degree, the New York Post reported. Mr Romero was initially charged with manslaughter following the fatal shooting of 46-year-old Koran Irvine on the George Washington Bridge. [1]

The victim was a father of two and a Con Edison worker who was killed during a road rage incident on October 20. The family of Mr Irvine is asking for the accused shooter to be incarcerated. Legal experts told the New York Post that it is unlikely the court will revoke the bail for Mr Romero. [1][5]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mr Romero posted 1 million dollars bail to secure his release prior to a court appearance. The incident occurred on the upper level of the bridge while Mr Romero was driving a vehicle owned by his employer, QVT Financial. [4][5]

The case began when Mr Romero was arrested shortly after the fatal shooting. Although early court appearances involved downgraded manslaughter charges, the grand jury indictment returned on Tuesday formally reinstated the second degree murder charge. [1][4]
