The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice are investigating Representative Ilhan Omar over alleged immigration fraud and financial disclosure reports, Fox News reported. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said that the federal fraud probe is a large case led by the Department of Justice and targets multiple people, according to the New York Post. [1][5]
President Donald Trump has claimed that Omar must resign from Congress over the allegations, Fox News reported. However, the United States Constitution grants the authority to remove a member solely to the House of Representatives itself. [1]
The New York Post reported that a 2009 Minnesota marriage license application obtained from the Hennepin County government shows Omar's surname was initially written as Omar, crossed out and changed to Elmi, and then reverted to Omar. Former Minnesota state representative Joe Radinovich declared that allegations concerning her marriage are almost certainly true, according to the New York Post. [2][4]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Representative Angie Craig directed a state lawmaker in 2019 to submit any ethics complaint regarding Omar directly to the Office of Congressional Ethics rather than making a referral herself. Separately, Judge James Boasberg is overseeing a search warrant dispute related to the case, Fox News Digital reported. [6][7][12]
Omar has served as the United States representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. [10][11]
