Chelsea defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday. Al Jazeera and the Daily Mail both reported that Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea, before Cole Palmer added a second goal from the penalty spot. According to Al Jazeera and Sky Sports, Palmer scored after United defender Lisandro Martinez received a red card. [3][4][9]
According to Al Jazeera, Rogers ran through the United defence to score on 50 minutes. Shortly after, Martinez was shown two rapid yellow cards. The Daily Mail reported that Martinez received his first yellow card for pulling back Rogers, before receiving a second yellow card following a VAR review for using his elbow on Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana as a corner was delivered. [3][4]
BBC News reported that Manchester United coach Jonny Evans spoke briefly to Martinez as he walked off the pitch, but Martinez did not pay attention. The Daily Mail noted that United manager Michael Carrick appeared to ignore Martinez following the dismissal. According to BBC Sport, Carrick criticized the defending of his team, specifically for the opening goal. [1][2][4]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Martinez had previously apologised after publicly criticizing the hierarchy at Manchester United following a 2-0 loss to Atletico Madrid. Al Jazeera reported that the defeat at Chelsea extended United's winless streak to nine games. [3][10]
The Daily Mail reported that Carrick believes he will retain his job as head coach despite the defeat leaving Manchester United closer to the relegation zone. [7]
