Young people took to the streets in approximately 34 cities across Germany on Halloween. DW reported that the participants were demanding greater political say and a more hopeful future. The demonstrations in Germany are part of a broader wave of youth movement rallies taking place across Europe. [1][7][8]
Before the demonstrations, Telegraph India and The Financial Express reported that organizers expected more than 160,000 people to participate nationwide. In Cologne, participants planned a march under the slogan Gen Z regelt. DW reported that local police later called off the planned procession after some participants covered their faces and used pyrotechnics. [1][4][5][8]
Following the disruption in Cologne, police instructed the remaining participants to hold a stationary rally on the Rhine riverbank. A police spokeswoman told the DPA news agency that officials were appealing for restraint. DW noted that attendance at the Cologne rally remained below the 15,000 people who had registered in advance. [1]
The Gen Z protests are part of a series of global political demonstrations predominantly led by individuals born from the mid-to-late 1990s to the early 2010s. Similar economic and social demonstrations have recently occurred across European cities. As FTMQ News reported earlier, demonstrations regarding living costs, public services, and housing have led to widespread protests in several countries including France and Italy. [10][12][13]
