Darializa Avila Chevalier won the general election for New York's 13th Congressional District on Tuesday night, the New York Post reported. She defeated Republican candidate Jomo Williams to secure the seat, which covers parts of Harlem and the Bronx. [1]
Avila Chevalier won as part of a slate of Democratic House candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, according to the New York Post and ABC7 New York. The winning slate also included candidates Claire Valdez and Brad Lander. [1][2]
Avila Chevalier is a community organizer and a member of both the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. She earned the Democratic nomination for the district after defeating incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the primary election. [3]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Avila Chevalier previously drew public attention in October after federal immigration officers shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck in the Bronx. Following that incident, she publicly called for New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to step down and criticized local police for not arresting the federal agent involved. [5][6]
