Democrats built early momentum in the battle for control of the United States Senate on Tuesday night, gaining critical seats in key states. The New York Post reported that incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff won reelection in Georgia. NPR and Oregon Public Broadcasting also reported on the victory in Georgia, which had previously been viewed as a major pickup opportunity for Republicans. [1][5][11]
Former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper won the Senate race in North Carolina, flipping the seat for the Democrats, according to the New York Post, NPR, and Oregon Public Broadcasting. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Cooper defeated Republican candidate Michael Whatley to secure the seat. [1][5][11][16]
In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican candidate Darline Graham, according to the New York Post, CBS News, and The Hill. The victory in the deep red state was described by the New York Post and CBS News as a major upset. [1][8][9][15]
Representative Chris Pappas won the New Hampshire Senate race, according to reports from Axios and Oregon Public Broadcasting. Axios noted that NBC News projected Pappas to become the first openly gay male member of the Senate. [2][11]
The United States Senate includes two seats for each state to provide equal territorial representation and promote federal balance. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Senate gains follow projections that Democrats have also won control of the House of Representatives. [14][15]
In short
- Jon Ossoff won reelection to the Senate in Georgia.
- Roy Cooper flipped a Senate seat for Democrats in North Carolina.
- Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham in South Carolina.
