New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Tuesday dismissed the idea that socialists can win statewide office, according to the Washington Examiner. The statement puts socialist candidates at distance even as Hochul maintains a collaborative relationship with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In an interview with Politico, Hochul warned that New York is a purple state where reaching out to Republicans is vital. [1]

The Washington Examiner reported that Hochul has drawn closer to Mayor Mamdani in recent months, emphasizing cooperation over conflict. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mamdani has actively campaigned for Hochul in her gubernatorial race against Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman. The New York Times and ABC7 New York both reported that Hochul and Blakeman traded attacks as early voting began across the state. [1][6][7][11][12]

The remarks from the governor follow criticism of her administration from conservative groups. According to the New York Post, Hochul ranked last at number 50 on the Cato Institute's 2026 Freedom in the 50 States list. The study gave her an F grade based on state economic and personal policies including fiscal rules and housing regulation. [3]

The political tension comes as early voting continues across New York State ahead of election day. Social democracy supports political and economic democracy through a gradualist approach to social equality within a capitalist welfare state. [6][10][11][12]
