Democrats were projected to win control of the United States House of Representatives on Tuesday in a vote seen as a referendum on the second term of President Donald Trump, UPI reported. NBC News and Decision Desk HQ called the race for the Democrats, projecting they would win 244 seats to 191 for the Republicans. [1]
All 435 seats in the House were up for election, as occurs every two years, according to UPI. The outlet reported that the outgoing House was closely divided with 218 Republicans, 214 Democrats, one independent, and two vacant seats. [1]
The independent member, Representative Kevin Kiley of California, caucuses with the Republicans, UPI reported. The two vacant seats were in the 20th Congressional District of Florida, following the departure of Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. [1]
The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of the United States Congress and shares authority with the Senate to pass federal legislation. The House holds exclusive constitutional powers to initiate revenue bills, impeach federal officers, and select the president if no candidate wins an Electoral College majority. [2]
