The Democratic Party has won control of the United States House of Representatives and made major progress toward securing the Senate majority, BBC News reported. In key Senate contests, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham, who took office following the death of her brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. BBC News also reported that Senator Jon Ossoff won re-election in Georgia, while former Governor Roy Cooper gained an open Republican-held seat in North Carolina. [1]

In New Hampshire, Democratic Representative Chris Pappas won a high-stakes Senate race against Republican John E. Sununu, Fox News reported. Pappas will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Fox News reported that Pappas held 60.6 percent of the vote compared to 37.61 percent for Sununu with 19.18 percent of the votes counted. [3]

Democrats also picked up congressional seats in the House. According to PBS NewsHour, Democrat Rebecca Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, defeated two-term Republican Representative Tom Kean to flip a House seat in New Jersey. [6]

The election cycle saw political tension within both major American parties, which have dominated national politics since the 1850s. The Daily Mail reported that Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens issued a statement criticizing her party after endorsing Republican Mike Rogers for Senate in Michigan. Additionally, police in Belknap County, New Hampshire, are investigating an incident where a man slapped a young Republican outside a polling place, according to the Daily Mail. [2][4][10][11]
