House Democratic candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier has called for New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to step down following an immigration enforcement shooting in the city, the Washington Examiner reported. The call follows a Thursday incident in the Marble Hill neighborhood where federal immigration officers shot a man around 4 p.m. local time. The Washington Examiner noted that Avila Chevalier, a socialist, raised objections over the actions of the New York Police Department in the aftermath of the event. [1]

Senior ICE official Marcos Charles stated during a Washington news conference that officers fired because they believed their lives were in danger, according to PBS NewsHour. Charles explained that officers used vehicles to block the man as he tried to drive away, but he accelerated toward them. PBS NewsHour and FTMQ News earlier reported that police identified the man as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal, who was shot superficially in the neck while driving with a 5-year-old boy. [2][3][12]

The shooting triggered anti-ICE protests in the city, Al Jazeera and the Washington Examiner reported. ABC7 Eyewitness News reported that four people were arrested during protests following the incident, while Al Jazeera reported that police pushed a politician to the ground during the demonstrations. [1][4][5][6]

The Department of Homeland Security described the operation as a targeted enforcement attempt, according to PBS NewsHour. Local officials, the city mayor, and state governor have condemned the shooting by federal agents. [3][6]
