Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky, according to statement from the White House reported by UPI, the Irish Times, and The Guardian. First Lady Melania Trump helped broker the agreement, UPI and the Daily Mail reported. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the temporary pause in fighting aims to allow humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. [1][2][3][6][17]

Reports differ on the precise start date for the halt in military operations. UPI and The Guardian reported that the White House said the ceasefire will begin on 27 October. The Irish Times reported that the White House set the start date for 29 October, while the Washington Examiner reported that it will begin on a Thursday. [1][2][3][7]

The agreement comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in the city. The Irish Times and The Guardian reported that residents face severe shortages of food, water, and electricity, with some surviving on weeds. Oleshky has been under Russian occupation since February 2022, and its population has dropped from about 25,000 before the invasion to approximately 2,000 residents. [1][2][3][14]

The local truce was agreed despite broader military action elsewhere. CNBC reported that Ukraine's Energy Ministry said Russian strikes overnight hit energy facilities across several regions, cutting electricity for more than 500,000 people. [4]
