A proposed energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has collapsed as Moscow sent a swarm of drones to hit infrastructure in central Ukraine and Kyiv resumed strikes on Russian oil refineries. According to The Guardian and PBS NewsHour, United States President Donald Trump had demanded the energy truce, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that Kyiv was done with the deal because Russian attacks never stopped. [1][2][5][8]

The Guardian and Al Jazeera reported that Russia accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack against an oil refinery in the Ryazan region, which lies south of Moscow. According to Al Jazeera, Moscow claimed that Ukraine was acting against United States peace efforts, noting that Russian diesel had begun to enter global markets following an arrangement with President Trump. [1][4]

The Irish Times reported that 600,000 Ukrainians experienced blackouts on Wednesday after Russian missiles and drones struck power stations. The outlet added that Russia has destroyed more than 60 per cent of Ukraine's power generation capacity. Ukraine fears further damage during its fifth full winter of war as American assistance is cut. [3]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, President Trump previously announced an immediate energy ceasefire alongside a deal to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian diesel imports. Ukrainian officials maintained that Russian forces continued to strike Ukrainian energy targets despite the announcement, prompting Kyiv to resume its own strikes. [2][16][17]
