The FBI arrested 42 year old Ian A. Brinksman at his home in Washington, D.C., on October 23, 2026. UPI reported that the Department of Justice charged the contractor with unlawfully transmitting national defense information. [1]

According to the Department of Justice, Brinksman had a personal relationship with an individual who operated a publication on Substack. UPI reported that this romantic partner repeatedly published the sensitive military material on the internet after receiving it from Brinksman. [1]

The case follows other recent legal actions involving leaked secrets. As FTMQ News reported earlier, a federal judge in New York is considering whether to dismiss charges against Master Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, who is accused of using classified information to make trades on Polymarket. [4]

In another major case, former National Security Agency translator Reality Leigh Winner received a sentence of five years and three months in federal prison in 2018. That was the longest sentence ever imposed for an unauthorized release of classified government information to the media. [2]
