Australian independent lawmaker Helen Haines is now in a serious but stable condition in hospital after an alleged attack earlier this week. The Guardian and ABC News Australia both reported that a spokesperson for The Alfred hospital in Melbourne confirmed her condition had improved on Saturday morning. [1][3]
The update comes after the federal MP for the Victorian seat of Indi was struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. The Guardian reported that Haines lost both legs as a result of the incident, which previously left her in a critical condition. [1][3]
ABC News Australia reported that Brendan Nugent, aged 43, faces several charges in relation to the event. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Nugent allegedly rammed Haines with a Toyota LandCruiser and was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and harming a public official. [3][11][12]
Prior to entering politics, Haines worked in nursing and midwifery services and as a health researcher in academia. She has served as the independent member of Parliament for the division of Indi since 2019. [9]
Supporters across Australia held candlelit gatherings on Friday evening to show solidarity with the injured politician. ABC News Australia reported that the movement invited citizens to light candles at 8pm to express community peace and unity following the tragedy. [4]
