Members of the German Bundestag and federal government ministers received warnings from Apple that their iPhones may have been targeted by spyware, Euronews reported. Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger confirmed the notifications during an appearance on the ARD television programme Bericht aus Berlin on Sunday. [1]
A letter from the Federal Office for Information Security, seen by Wildberger, showed that alerts began reaching affected mobile devices on 29 October. The security warnings stated that Apple had detected an attack involving mercenary spyware, according to Euronews. [1]
Authorities have told those affected to treat their mobile devices as compromised. Euronews reported that officials do not yet know how many individuals were targeted or who was behind the cyberattack. [1]
The alerts come as Germany focuses on digital security issues. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Berlin is hosting a government summit examining the uses and dangers of digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence technology. [1][3]
