The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt has passed a motion calling for an immediate end to all German financial and military support for Ukraine, DW reported. The motion passed during a special parliamentary session with the combined votes of two populist parties. [1]
According to DW, the far-right Alternative for Germany, known as the AfD, teamed up with the left-wing populist Alliance for Social Justice and Economic Reason, or BSW, to pass the proposal. Both parties are now urging the state premier of Saxony-Anhalt, Sven Schulze of the center-right Christian Democratic Union, to advocate for their position in the Bundesrat, Germany's upper house of parliament. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, Saxony-Anhalt has recently been a site of significant political shifts for the far-right party. Tobias Rausch of the AfD was previously elected speaker of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament after receiving support from nine outside lawmakers, marking the first time a far-right politician has held such a post in a German state parliament since World War Two. [9][10]
The joint action by the AfD and BSW comes as Germany works to organize a Coalition of the Willing meeting while Russia strikes the energy sector in Ukraine, Euromaidan Press reported. [4]
