Voters consider dozens of state ballot measures on Election Day

Voters in 39 U.S. states are deciding on more than 140 state ballot initiatives during Election Day on Tuesday, UPI reported. The nationwide voting coincides with congressional elections where all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 Senate seats are on the line, according to Mexico News Daily. [1][3]

The ballot measures address issues such as voting rights, abortion rights, taxes, and the rights of transgender youth, UPI reported. One major measure is California's Proposition 40, which would place a one-time state tax of 5% on state residents with a net worth of at least $1 billion while excluding retirement accounts, pensions, and real estate. The ballot initiatives build on previous state-level voting measures across the country. As FTMQ News reported earlier, voters in Michigan were set to consider citizen-led measures to restrict political spending by regulated electric utilities. [11]

The outcome of the U.S. midterm elections could also affect international relationships. According to a political risk consultancy cited by Mexico News Daily, United States President Donald Trump could increase security-related demands on Mexico depending on the election results. [3]
