Profits at some of the best known charity shops in the United Kingdom have fallen significantly due to trading pressures and competition from online secondhand clothing platforms, the Guardian reported. The drop in income has led to concerns that a critical fundraising model for the sector is under threat. [1]
According to unpublished accounts seen by the Financial Times and reported by the Guardian, Oxfam experienced a 23 percent drop in retail profit over the last financial year. The charity recorded a retail profit of 4.9 million pounds, down from 6.4 million pounds in the previous year. Oxfam described the trading conditions as exceptionally challenging. The Guardian noted that the British Heart Foundation operates the largest charity shop network on the high street. [1]
Charity shops are social enterprises run by charitable organizations to raise funds, selling donated items including clothing, books, shoes, and furniture. Most goods are donated by the public and shops are frequently staffed by volunteers, allowing items to be sold at lower prices to fund the organization's charitable work. [2]
