The president of the British Chambers of Commerce, Andy Haldane, has called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to tax online sales at a higher rate than physical shops. The Guardian reported that Mr Haldane, a former senior adviser to the prime minister, urged the government to realign the tax system to help struggling high streets. [1]

The calls come as Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey prepare to deliver their first budget next week. According to the Guardian, business leaders want action to prevent more shop closures across the United Kingdom and level the playing field for traditional retailers. [1]

Andy Burnham has served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party since July 2026. He previously served as the Mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 until 2026, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [2][4]
