Trump calls for resignation of Ilhan Omar over surname claims

President Donald Trump stated during an Iowa rally that Representative Ilhan Omar should resign from Congress, claiming she used a fake name to be sworn in. The New York Post and The Times of India both reported on Trump's statements demanding her resignation. Trump asserted that it is not looking good for the Minnesota lawmaker following recent court filings related to a federal immigration fraud probe. [1][11]

The New York Post reported that court filings associated with the federal probe revealed Omar's actual surname is Elmi, which matches the surname of her former husband Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. Fox News added that Omar denied committing immigration fraud when marrying Elmi. When asked about any familial relation to her ex-husband, Omar stated, "Not to my knowledge." [1][4]

The allegations come after federal agents searched Omar's Washington, D.C., residence on Oct. 12. BBC News reported that agents seized over a dozen items, including cell phones and notebooks. Following the pre-dawn raid, NewsNation and The Guardian reported that Omar plans to move out of her Washington home, with NewsNation quoting her saying she cannot continue living there. Omar has served as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, she is a member of the Democratic Party and was one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress.
