Authorities in Greece and Turkey have issued severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall and flooding, the Guardian reported on Friday. An area of low pressure in the region has caused powerful thunderstorms and strong winds that will continue to affect parts of south-eastern Europe and Turkey over the next few days. [1]
The severe weather has already caused fatalities in south-western Turkey. According to the Guardian, a tornado formed during an intense thunderstorm in the coastal city of Antalya on Tuesday, killing four construction workers. [1]
Greece is located in south-eastern Europe on the Balkan peninsula, bordered to the east by Turkey across the Aegean Sea. Severe weather warnings are official public alerts issued when dangerous storms are detected in an area's direct path. Floods occur frequently across Turkish river basins and coastal regions due to prolonged heavy rainfall. [4][5][6]
More heavy rain and severe weather conditions are expected to persist across the region in the coming days, the Guardian reported. [1]
