Emergency services recovered the body of a man from floodwaters on Queensland's Fraser Coast shortly after 11:00 am on Monday. According to The Guardian and ABC News Australia, responders were called to Smothering Creek on Boompa Road in Boompa, west of Maryborough. The Guardian and ABC News Australia both reported that police are preparing a report for the coroner as an investigation into his death begins. [1][2]
ABC News Australia reported that the victim was a 57-year-old man. The outlet added that Boompa Road recorded 148 millimetres of rain within a 24-hour period, leaving several areas of the Fraser Coast flooded after days of severe weather. [1][2]
The latest torrential downpours follow a weekend of severe weather across eastern Australia. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the Bureau of Meteorology issued multiple flood warnings for southern Queensland, where days of heavy rainfall caused flash flooding, school closures, and hundreds of emergency callouts. [9][10]
Queensland was founded as a self-governing British colony in 1859 before joining as one of Australia's six founding states in 1901. The region has a history of severe flooding events, including prolonged floods in late 2010 and early 2011 that caused 36 deaths following record rainfall. [7][8]
