The Met Office and Met Éireann have issued weather warnings as Storm Austen approaches the UK and Ireland, according to reports from BBC News and The Guardian. The storm is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to southern parts of the UK and across Ireland later this week. The Guardian reported that Austen is the first named storm of the European windstorm season. [1][2][4][8][12]

BBC News reported that the Met Office issued an amber weather warning for strong winds in Cornwall and parts of west Devon. The amber warning is valid from 03:00 until 10:00 BST on Friday. Wind gusts could reach up to 80mph around exposed coasts and 60mph to 70mph elsewhere, with risks of power cuts, building damage, and danger to life from flying debris, BBC News added. The Guardian noted that a broader yellow warning covers large parts of southern England and south Wales. [1][2][8][9]

In Ireland, Met Éireann announced a nationwide status yellow rain warning that will take effect at 7pm on Thursday and remain in place until 8am on Friday, according to the Irish Times. Heavy rain and strong winds are expected to spread eastward across Ireland, bringing a risk of localized flooding and difficult traveling conditions, as reported by the Irish Times and the Irish Examiner. [4][5][7]

The European windstorm season runs from September through August, marking the twelfth year of the continent's coordinated severe weather naming programme. Unsettled weather conditions and heavy rainfall are expected to continue into the weekend across affected regions, according to the Irish Examiner. [7][12]
