Large parts of eastern Australia were placed on alert for severe thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon, according to the Guardian. The Bureau of Meteorology warned that severe weather could bring hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, and power outages to southern Queensland, western New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and eastern Victoria. [1]
The Guardian reported that a broad line of storms had already moved through western New South Wales. Additionally, eight flood warnings were active across southern Queensland following days of torrential rain. Forecasts indicate that potential storms and flood risks will continue into Monday. [1]
The severe weather in Australia follows recent storm activity in Europe, as FTMQ News reported earlier. Storm Austen brought heavy rain and severe wind gusts to France, the UK, and Ireland late last week, causing power outages and widespread travel disruption as the first named storm of the season. [3]
Shortly after Storm Austen, Storm Boelo hit the UK with wind speeds reaching over 80mph in northern regions, as FTMQ News reported earlier. Met Office amber weather warnings were issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England, leaving thousands of homes without power. [2]
