Defense barrister Ian Winter KC delivered his closing speech on Monday at Southwark Crown Court in the trial of Russell Brand, BBC News, the Irish Times, and the Guardian reported. The BBC, the Irish Times, the Guardian, and Deadline all reported that Winter told jurors earlier media allegations about the comedian had poisoned the well of justice. [1][2][3][8]

BBC News reported that Winter singled out a Channel 4 documentary and reports in the Times and Sunday Times from 2023. According to BBC News, Winter argued that these stories caused individuals who had not previously considered it appropriate to bring criminal allegations to do so, many years after the alleged events. The Irish Times and the Guardian both reported that Winter also pointed to monstrous delays in the women coming forward to the police. [1][2][3]

According to Variety, the Irish Times, and the Guardian, Winter argued to the jury that there was no evidence that Brand is a psychopath who rapes people and thinks it is normal. Variety reported that Winter stated Brand believed the encounters were consensual. BBC News reported that Winter told jurors Brand had an immense amount of sex, but that none of it was unlawful. [1][2][3][5]

Brand faces seven counts, including three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one allegation of attempted indecent assault, BBC News reported. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Brand is an English comedian and media personality who denies all charges against him. The Telegraph reported that Brand was accompanied to Southwark Crown Court by his father-in-law, Bernard Gallacher. [1][4][11][14][15]
