Firefighters in Texas rescued a raccoon after it was spotted high in a tree with its head stuck inside a hollow, UPI reported on November 2. The rescue took place after a neighbor noticed the trapped animal and called 911 for help. [1]

A crew from the Austin Firefighters Association was dispatched to the scene to assist the animal. A firefighter climbed up a ladder to reach the raccoon located high up in the tree. [1]

To free the trapped animal, the firefighter used a hydraulic spreader, a tool commonly known as the Jaws of Life. The equipment allowed the crew to widen the opening in the tree so the raccoon could safely pull its head out. [1]

The Austin Firefighters Association said the rescue demonstrated how the work of local firefighters goes beyond fighting fires and responding to typical emergencies, describing the response as an example of what makes them an important part of the community. [1]
