Russell Brand rape trial prosecution opening begins at Southwark Crown Court

Comedian and actor Russell Brand arrived at Southwark Crown Court in London on Wednesday as prosecutors prepare to open their case against him. The Guardian and thejournal.ie reported that Brand was driven to the court building in a black Mercedes-Benz van before walking inside. Speaking to reporters outside the court, Brand stated that he felt concerned but hopeful. [1][2]

A jury of eight men and four women was selected across Monday and Tuesday to hear the case, according to the Irish Times, with UPI reporting that one reserve juror was also chosen. Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC is scheduled to set out the opening details against Brand on Wednesday, thejournal.ie and the Irish Times reported. Judge Joel Bennathan instructed jurors to ignore previous media coverage and to avoid conducting independent research. [2][3][4]

Brand faces seven charges concerning six women, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault, according to UPI. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the charges cover alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009.
