Former Open Championship winner Louis Oosthuizen has announced his departure from LIV Golf. Fox News and BBC Sport reported that the South African golfer posted the decision on social media on Wednesday. Oosthuizen stated that leaving the circuit was the hardest decision he has had to make in his career, according to BBC Sport. [1][4]
Oosthuizen cited schedule concerns with LIV 2.0 as a primary reason for stepping away, Fox News reported. He explained that controlling his future schedule played a key role in his choice, while also confirming his intention to return to the DP World Tour in 2027. Fox News and Golf Digest both noted that only four players have committed to the circuit ahead of an October 25 deadline. [1][4][7]
The departure follows financial troubles for the golf circuit. BBC Sport reported that LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States in September after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its multibillion-dollar backing. Oosthuizen, who joined LIV Golf in 2022, served as captain of the Southern Guards GC team. [4]
Oosthuizen won the 2010 Open Championship and has finished as runner-up in all four major golf championships. His career high was reaching fourth place on the Official World Golf Ranking in January 2013. [1][9]
