Barefoot worshippers walked across a bed of smouldering embers on Saturday night at Si Thian Kong Temple in Kuala Pilah, Malaysia. Euronews reported that the fire-walking ritual took place alongside fireworks, firecrackers, and a lion dance during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. [1]
Before starting the walk, participants levelled the fire pit and scattered salt over the coals, according to Euronews. Worshippers also lit candles, made offerings, and received blessings with red paint. The temple chairman explained that crossing the fire is intended to bring good luck, health, and business success for the year ahead. [1]
The Nine Emperor Gods Festival is an annual nine-day Taoist celebration starting on the eve of the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is observed primarily in Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand. [1][7]
The tradition originated in China during the Qing dynasty and developed into a Southeast Asian practice during the late 19th century. Chinese migrant networks spread the tradition through tin mining economies and temple communities across regional ports such as Penang, Phuket, and Singapore. [9]
