Russia is ready in principle to resume peace talks with the United States and Ukraine to end the war, according to the BBC and CBS News. The BBC and the South China Morning Post reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin met United States special envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg. Top presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a new round of negotiations could take place as soon as next month, possibly in Abu Dhabi, the BBC reported. [1][5][7]
CBS News reported that envoy Steve Witkoff voiced hope that Ukraine would be included in the negotiations. The South China Morning Post added that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Steve Witkoff represents the latest effort by Washington to bring an end to the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies have been pushing Moscow to resume negotiations, which were suspended in February, the BBC reported. [1][5][7]
Prior to the diplomatic push, Fox News reported that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed openness to freezing the front lines of the conflict as a potential path toward a ceasefire. Diplomatic efforts coincide with ongoing military actions, as CNBC reported that Ukraine launched massive drone strikes targeting key Russian oil infrastructure over the weekend. [2][6]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, tension has grown over military operations after United States President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, claiming they drive up energy prices. Peace talks originally began after Russia initiated a full invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. [12][14]
