Jason Corbett's sister criticises State support after legal battle for custody

The sister of slain Limerick man Jason Corbett has criticised the Irish government over the administrative process involved in becoming the carer of his two children. Tracey Corbett Lynch stated that she felt completely abandoned by the State when they were at their most vulnerable, according to the Irish Examiner. [1]

The Irish Examiner reported that Tracey Corbett Lynch spoke publicly about the difficult process to gain custody and become the official carer for her brother's children following his death. She stated that grieving and traumatised children and their carers should never be penalised for being cared for by their own flesh and blood. [1]

Jason Corbett was beaten to death at his home in Davidson County, North Carolina, on August 2, 2015, at the age of 39. His wife Molly Martens Corbett and her father Thomas Martens admitted to the killing but claimed self defense. Autopsy reports revealed severe blunt force trauma caused by a baseball bat and a paving stone. [2][4]

Molly Martens Corbett and Thomas Martens were initially convicted of second degree murder in 2017 and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison before their convictions were overturned on appeal. [4]
