Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger campaigns for Roy Cooper in North Carolina

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger is campaigning in North Carolina this week to support fellow Democrat Roy Cooper in his campaign for the United States Senate, according to the Washington Examiner. Spanberger posted on social media that neighbors to the south are prepared to elect Cooper to the Senate and choose Democrats across the state. [1]

The campaign trail appearance comes during the 2026 midterm elections, the Washington Examiner reported. Cooper served as the 75th governor of North Carolina from 2017 to 2025 and previously served as the state attorney general. [1][6]

In separate news from the state, prosecutors announced on Wednesday that they will seek the death penalty against former Marine Nigel Max Edge, the Washington Examiner and the New York Post reported. Edge faces three counts of first-degree murder after being accused of killing three people in a mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport, North Carolina, in September 2025. [2][3]

Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David acknowledged Edge's military service in Iraq, where Edge suffered a traumatic brain injury and subsequently struggled with mental health issues, according to the New York Post. [3]
