More than 200 solicitors and barristers gathered outside the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin on Monday as the new legal year began. The Irish Times reported on the protest outside the court complex. As FTMQ News reported earlier, legal professionals walked out of the court building at the start of the new legal term over an ongoing pay dispute with Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan. [1][6][7]
The dispute between criminal defence solicitors and the justice minister has been ongoing since June. According to RTE.ie, the Chief Justice urged an end to the legal aid dispute. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Chief Justice Donal O'Donnell expressed concern about the situation and noted that the ongoing dispute is a concern to judges. [1][6][7]
The Irish Independent reported that high-profile cases involving Mike Gaine, Catriona Carey, and Scarlett Faulkner are among the major trials hanging over the start of the new legal year as the legal protest continues. Further action was also reported at Castlebar. [1]
