Irish Chief Justice raises concern over ongoing legal aid dispute
Chief Justice Donal O'Donnell expressed concern about the legal aid dispute in Ireland as criminal defence lawyers staged a walkout at the start of the new court term.

The Chief Justice of Ireland, Donal O'Donnell, has stated that the continuing dispute over legal aid between criminal defence solicitors and the Department of Justice is a matter of concern to him and judges generally. RTE and the Irish Examiner both reported that the Chief Justice made the remarks at the Four Courts during a ceremony marking the start of the new legal year. [1][2]
RTE reported that more than one hundred solicitors and barristers working in criminal defence walked out of court in Dublin as the legal term began. The walkout was staged to highlight their ongoing opposition to a new payment scheme for criminal legal aid. [1]
According to RTE, criminal defence solicitors have been in dispute with the Minister for Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, since June when the new payment structure was introduced. Solicitors have renewed their calls for talks with the Government as the disagreement continues. [1]
