Representative Haley Stevens has agreed to campaign alongside her former primary rival, Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El Sayed, just two days before Election Day. The Washington Examiner and AP News reported that the two Democrats will make a rare joint appearance in the final stretch of the campaign. According to MSNBC, this will be their first joint appearance together since a party unity breakfast held shortly after the August primary. [1][2][7]

The joint campaign event follows a bitter Democratic primary race where El Sayed narrowly defeated Stevens. MSNBC reported that Democrats have spent weeks trying to unite the party behind El Sayed after his razor thin primary victory. The Washington Examiner added that Stevens had largely stayed out of public view after her defeat. [1][7]

The display of unity comes amid intra party friction in the state. AP News and Fox News reported that Stevens' fiance, Jason Turkish, announced he will vote for Republican nominee Mike Rogers instead of El Sayed. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Turkish, who has previously donated more than 300,000 dollars to Democrats, cited concerns regarding El Sayed as his reason for supporting Rogers. [2][8][14]

The Michigan contest could determine control of the upper chamber of Congress. The Washington Examiner reported that polls favor Democrats to capture both houses of Congress, but a win by Rogers in Michigan could help Republicans preserve their Senate majority. According to the Washington Examiner, voter turnout in Detroit could prove decisive, following an August primary where only about 21 percent of registered voters in the city cast ballots. [3][5]
