Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers accused NBC News moderator Kristen Welker of defending his Democratic opponent, Abdul El Sayed, during a televised exchange on Sunday, Fox News reported. Rogers challenged Welker after she noted that El Sayed had disavowed any connection to the Muslim Brotherhood. El Sayed is an epidemiologist, public health administrator, and academic who is running as the Democratic candidate for the United States Senate in Michigan, according to Wikipedia. [2][3]

The controversy gained further attention on Monday when Washington Examiner economics columnist Tiana Lowe Doescher stated on CNN This Morning that El Sayed needs to address allegations regarding his family, the Washington Examiner reported. Doescher argued that the situation differs from false claims made about former President Barack Obama, pointing to social media posts allegedly made by El Sayed's sister concerning their mother. [1][5]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, El Sayed denied having personal or family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood during an NBC interview. Rogers previously cited 2012 posts by El Sayed's half sister, who claimed that their mother was an active member of the organization in Egypt during the 1970s. Donald Trump has also accused El Sayed of being a member of the group. [6][7]

The political dispute comes in the final days of the Michigan Senate election campaign. Former President Barack Obama and Donald Trump were both scheduled to campaign in Michigan for their respective candidates ahead of the vote, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [6]
