Death row inmate Christa Pike has released her first public statement since surviving a botched execution attempt in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. BBC News, the Irish Times, the New York Post, and the Daily Express reported that the 50-year-old prisoner described waking up in a hospital bed confused and experiencing continuous pain across her body. Pike was discharged from the hospital at the end of last month and returned to prison, according to BBC News, while the Irish Times noted that she remains largely isolated in the medical ward of the facility. [1][2][3][4]

The execution attempt involved two separate doses of the barbiturate pentobarbital. BBC News, the Irish Times, the New York Post, and the Daily Express reported that Pike survived the two lethal injections and was transported to the hospital unconscious but alive. In her statement issued through her legal team on Friday, Pike stated that there has not been a moment since that night when she has not been in pain, adding that her body, arms, hands, and throat hurt. [1][2][3][4]

Pike was convicted in March 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old classmate Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville, Tennessee, when Pike was 18 years old. She received a death sentence at age 20, making her one of the youngest women sentenced to capital punishment in the United States since 1976. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Pike was set to be executed on September 30 before the attempt failed, after which a judge ordered officials to preserve all evidence connected to the execution. [13][14][15][16]

The New York Post reported that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has hinted Pike's sentence will remain unchanged following the failed execution attempt. Pike stated in her public comments that she does not know what comes next as she continues to recover in prison. [3][7]
