Trading Standards officers have seized counterfeit beauty products across the United Kingdom that contained toxic substances, the Guardian reported. The watchdog warned that fake copies of popular and expensive cosmetics, skincare items, and perfumes are becoming a rising problem and are among its most frequently investigated items. [1]
Laboratory tests on the seized items revealed 13,200 parts per million of mercury in one skincare product, according to the Guardian. Investigators also discovered high levels of lead in eyeshadow, contour products, and lipstick, nicotine in perfume, and a fake fragrance made of approximately 80 percent methanol. [1]
Methanol toxicity is poisoning caused by methanol that typically occurs through ingestion. Exposure can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, decreased consciousness, abdominal pain, and poor coordination, while long term outcomes can include kidney failure and blindness. [2]
The British watchdog warned that counterfeit copies of popular cosmetics and skincare brands are significantly more likely to contain dangerous toxic substances than genuine products, the Guardian reported. [1]
