Representative Haley Stevens stated that her decision to withdraw support for Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed was not made for her by anyone else, according to the New York Post. The New York Post reported that Stevens criticized fellow Democrats for their quick condemnation of her action, claiming their reaction shows a troubling trend inside the Democratic Party. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Stevens publicly endorsed Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the Michigan United States Senate race. [1][8][9]
Fox News reported that the campaign for El-Sayed raised more than $2.4 million in a single day following the endorsement shift. According to Fox News, the campaign stated that the money came from over 65,000 donors with an average contribution of $36.74. Nearly 29,600 of those individuals contributed to the campaign for the first time. [4][5]
The endorsement changes occurred during the final push of the Michigan election, as FTMQ News reported earlier. Stevens had previously lost to El-Sayed in the Democratic primary held in August. Before appearing with Rogers at a church in Detroit, Stevens denied rumors of her upcoming endorsement change to Representative Debbie Dingell. House Democrats have since considered whether to banish Stevens over her decision. [8][9]
The move drew sharp criticism from Democratic commentators and former allies, according to MSNBC. One MSNBC contributor noted that Stevens lied shortly before endorsing Rogers. United States Senator Elizabeth Warren joined El-Sayed on the campaign trail in Detroit on Monday to support his campaign, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [6][7][9]
