Former special counsel obtained draft Trump fundraising emails and donor details

Former special counsel Jack Smith obtained draft fundraising emails and donor information from hundreds of President Donald Trump's supporters following the 2020 election. The New York Post reported that the records were gathered as part of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Arctic Frost investigation into efforts to overturn the election results. [1]

The records reveal that Smith obtained details regarding potential contributors to the Trump Make America Great Again Committee. The documents included draft fundraising appeals in which Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, asked supporters to contribute as 2020 Election Day Donors, according to the New York Post. [1]

Smith previously served as an assistant United States attorney, acting United States attorney, and head of the Department of Justice Public Integrity Section, where he supervised public corruption and election crime cases. He also worked at the International Criminal Court and served as chief prosecutor at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague before serving as special counsel from November 18, 2022, until his resignation on January 10, 2025.
