Federal probes found sham marriage evidence for Ilhan Omar case

Federal investigators found evidence that Representative Ilhan Omar entered into a sham marriage with a man believed to be her brother during an investigation in 2016, the New York Post reported. The 2016 probe by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security targeted her marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. However, prosecutors concluded that any potential crime fell outside the five year statute of limitations. A source familiar with the inquiry claimed that a United States Attorney in Minnesota shut down the probe shortly after taking office, according to the New York Post. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is seeking to keep a search warrant regarding Representative Omar sealed for now, the Washington Post reported. Resurfaced social media posts drawn into federal examination showed Omar calling her father Nur Said in 2013, though Omar maintains that her name has always been Ilhan Omar. Omar has served as the United States representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. She is a member of the Democratic Party and previously served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019.
