Democrat Richard Ojeda has defeated Republican Representative Richard Hudson in North Carolina's Ninth congressional district. The Daily Mail and Politico both reported that Hudson, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee, has conceded defeat in his re-election bid. The Daily Mail reported that Ojeda is a former state senator and retired Army Major who served for 24 years and previously ran for president. [1][5]
Hudson has served in Congress for 14 years and represented the district since 2013, which covers a large part of the southern Piedmont area from Concord to Spring Lake. As chair of the NRCC, Hudson led the House GOP campaign arm that raised over $260 million for races across the United States. His own re-election campaign cost approximately $2 million, and he conceded with 95 percent of the votes counted, according to the Daily Mail. [1][9]
The defeat came amid broader midterm election losses for Republicans across the country. Al Jazeera reported that Democrat Troy Jackson won a United States Senate seat in Maine, defeating Republican Susan Collins who had held the seat for three decades. The Guardian reported that Democrats retook control of the United States Senate and were expected to regain control of the House of Representatives. [3][6]
In Texas, Al Jazeera reported that Democrats won control of the state Senate for the first time in almost 40 years. Additionally, Washingtonexaminer.com reported that Democrat and Latin Grammy-winning Tejano singer Bobby Pulido unseated Republican Representative Monica De La Cruz in Texas's 15th Congressional District, despite state Republicans having redrawn the district in their favor. [4][7]
Following the midterm results, The Guardian reported that Democratic Representative Robert Garcia, who is set to become the chair of the House oversight committee, warned Republicans to prepare for upcoming investigations. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Democrats also secured a historic Senate win in South Carolina when Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham. [3][13]
