Democratic nominee J.D. Ford defeated incumbent Republican Victoria Spartz in Indiana's 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, the Washington Examiner and PBS NewsHour reported. The Associated Press called the race for Ford at 1:03 a.m. Ford secured 51.7% of the vote against 48.3% for Spartz, with 99% of the ballots counted, according to the Washington Examiner. [1][2]

The result marked an upset in a district that Donald Trump won by nearly 17 percentage points two years prior, PBS NewsHour reported. Spartz, who is the first and only Ukrainian-born member of Congress, had previously won her third term in 2024 by 18.5 percentage points, according to the Washington Examiner. [1][2]

The victory contributed to Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives, Fox News reported. The network projected major Republican losses among Hispanic, young, independent, and rural voters. [3]

With the House majority secured, Democrats will take control of congressional committees and hold subpoena power, according to the Daily Signal. This will allow the party to launch investigations, hold hearings, and pursue potential impeachments during the final two years of President Donald Trump's term. [3][4]
