The High Court of Australia has agreed to hear an appeal by One Nation leader Pauline Hanson against a court ruling that found she racially vilified Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi. The Daily Mail and ABC News Australia reported that the High Court granted the challenge to racial discrimination findings against her. [1][2]
According to ABC News Australia, the legal dispute stems from an interaction on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in September 2022. During the exchange, Senator Hanson told Senator Faruqi to, quote, "piss off back to Pakistan". The Daily Mail noted that the High Court will now consider the comments made to the senator. [1][2]
ABC News Australia reported that the Federal Court previously upheld a decision finding Senator Hanson breached racial discrimination laws. Following that ruling, Senator Hanson applied for special leave to appeal to the High Court in August. [2]
Senator Hanson has served as a senator for Queensland since 2016 and leads the One Nation party, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [8]
