A hiker was found dead on Mount Whitney on October 20 after missing checkout at a motel in Northern California, the New York Post reported. The guest, who has not been publicly identified, was discovered on the steep Mountaineer's Route by a search helicopter. [1]
The Inyo County Sheriff's Office stated that staff at a motel in Lone Pine called authorities on October 19, according to the New York Post. The motel staff reported that the guest had left personal belongings behind after failing to check out on time and had planned to hike in the area. The sheriff's office attempted to contact the hiker before launching the search. [1]
Mount Whitney lies in the Sierra Nevada range in East-Central California along the border of Inyo and Tulare counties. It rises to an elevation of 14,505 feet, making it the highest point in the contiguous United States. The mountain's eastern slopes are located within the Inyo National Forest, while the western slopes fall inside Sequoia National Park. [2]
The peak serves as the southern terminus of the John Muir Trail, a 211-mile footpath starting in Yosemite Valley. Mount Whitney was first climbed in 1873 by local miners A. H. Johnson, Charles D. Begole, and John Lucas. The summit was named in 1864 after Josiah Dwight Whitney, who served as the state geologist for the California Geological Survey. [2][4]
